Wikipedia describes them as 'a type of optical illusion consisting of a two-dimensional figure which is instantly and subconsciously interpreted by the visual system as representing a projection of a three-dimensional object although it is not actually possible for such an object to exist (at least not in the form interpreted by the visual system).' Screw that, I'm going to build one... somehow...
There must be someway to build these things. Well in fact, after gratuitous amounts of research, I found that two have already been built, sort of.
One is the impossible cube which can potentially be built if you remove two sections creating the illusion that one corner overlaps the other.
Amazingly Brian McKay and Ahmed Abas designed and actually built a Penrose Triangle sculpture in Perth, Australia. However it only works from two angles because if viewed from a different angle, the illusion is broken and the scultpure is merely a big wonky line of metal.
With these two famous impossible objects already built, I am left to construct the Blivet (which looks bloody complicated!) Well I'll have to think about it more. It's either this or breed a five-legged elephant!
